Abstract
Background: Treatment Fidelity refers to the accuracy of the delivery of Evidence-Based Practices (EBP) and is a necessary component for their successful implementation. Cognitive Adaptation Training (CAT) is an EBP that aims to help compensate for the cognitive deficits that individuals with a diagnosis of severe mental illness (SMI) experience in their daily lives. Though studies have established the effects of CAT on individuals with SMI, implementation of the intervention, as well as the development of a fidelity instrument remained challenging. Methods: The current study is conducted based on a recent multicenter cluster randomized control trial (van Dam et al., 2020) that developed and assessed an implementation plan intended to facilitate the use of CAT within hospital settings. The study involved four mental health institutions in the Netherlands, 159 nurses and, 135 patients with SMI. CAT Fidelity Scale was used for the first time in order to assess the nurse’s capability to deliver treatment. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine if the treatment fidelity of nurses can predict treatment outcomes. An additional aim of the study was to investigate if the demographics of the nurses are associated with how much they adhered to the intervention, as well as the treatment outcomes. Findings: The results revealed that the treatment fidelity of the nurses did not predict the treatment outcome, and further, there were not any associations between the above factors. Due to the study’s limitations, further research is needed to validate these results.
