Abstract

ADHD symptoms have been linked to mechanisms like interference control in the past. Recent findings found conflicting results in linking interference Control to ADHD while showing an association between ADHD and effort allocation. This paper examines the influence of effort allocation in interference control in first-year bachelor students with varying ADHD symptoms. By testing for accuracy (ACC) and mean reaction time (MRT) in slow, medium, and fast presentation rate conditions, (1) ACC was expected to be lower in the fast condition than in the medium condition. At the same time, longer MRT was anticipated in the slow condition compared to the medium condition. Further, (2) interference control, effort allocation, and ADHD were expected to interact. These hypotheses were tested using a more recent version of the trial-by-trial Stroop task that was administered to a sample of 71 first-year Bachelor students between 18 and 27 with varying levels of ADHD. The results showed significant differences in ACC between the fast and the medium conditions and MRT between the slow and the medium conditions. However, these findings were not influenced by interference control, and there appeared to be no interaction between interference control, effort allocation and ADHD. These findings could further help refine how these predictors of ADHD symptoms can be seen in relation to each other to explain the performance deficit in students with ADHD.
