Abstract
A significant amount of previous research shows the effectiveness of including images in factual learning. Additionally, repeated testing after learning sessions has been proven to be helpful in learning processes. However, not much is known about the effectiveness of using images in testing. In this study, we compared the effects of an image-based learning system to a text-based learning system. Participants (n=40) were asked to learn Swahili words paired with pictures (condition 1) and English translations (condition 2) in an adaptive learning system. The participants were tested on the material immediately after the learning session and one week after the learning session. The testing modality matched the learning modality in both testing occasions. We compared the response accuracy and reaction times of the participants for each condition, both for the immediate testing phase and the delayed testing phase. The results showed that there was no significant effect of the learning modality on the response speed in both testing phases. In the immediate testing phase, the response accuracy was higher when the participants were learning with the image modality, while in the delayed testing phase no differences were observed between the two modalities. Based on these analyses, we cannot find concrete evidence that a picture based learning system leads to better learning outcomes compared to a text based learning system. Further replications of this study are necessary for drawing stronger conclusions.
