Abstract
Gratitude has been shown to have an affiliative and social function in interpersonal contexts and therefore could be a psychological strategy for improving the relationship between ingroup and outgroup. Therefore, this current study investigated gratitude´s role in the intergroup context between Dutch and international students in Groningen. We hypothesized that gratitude toward the outgroup would predict outgroup helping. Furthermore, we suggested that outgroup-directed empathy would mediate the relationship between gratitude toward the outgroup and outgroup helping. We conducted an online experiment with 139 Dutch first-year psychology students. All participants were assigned to a writing task either inducing outgroup-directed gratitude, general gratitude, or a control condition. There was no direct effect of gratitude toward the outgroup on outgroup helping, but we found an indirect effect via outgroup empathy. Gratitude can induce feelings of empathy for ingroup members toward the outgroup. Outgroup empathy in turn positively affects intergroup relations by promoting outgroup helping. Theoretical implications, limitations, and future research directions are discussed.
