Abstract

The diagnosis of ADHD in adults is still unclear due to little existing research. This study attempts to broaden current knowledge of ADHD in adults to improve diagnostics. In accordance with the state regulation deficit model, the effects of effort allocation on ADHD symptomology were assessed. Effort allocation is assumed to be an underlying mechanism of the cognitive impairments of individuals with ADHD. Such impairments include executive functions (EF), which are an important aspect of ADHD. An experimental study was conducted on a sample of young adults (N =71). ADHD symptom severity was assessed using the CAARS. An online version of the Stroop task, measuring interference control, was used to measure potential impairments in effort allocation. Interference control is considered to fall under the umbrella term ‘executive functions’ (EF). Three different event rates were used as manipulators. The results of the study suggest that ADHD symptom severity is not associated with effort allocation. Additionally, the results suggest that the gender of young adults with ADHD is not associated with effort allocation. It was concluded that effort allocation is not more impaired among adults with greater ADHD symptom severity and that there are no differences in effort allocation between men and women with ADHD. More studies are needed to investigate the effects of effort allocation in adults with ADHD in other cognitive domains. Keywords: effort allocation, ADHD, state regulation deficit, event rate, gender
