Abstract

De hoeveelheid onderzoek naar volwassenen met ADHD is nog beperkt, maar volgens Barkley (2018) zijn voornamelijk executieve functies de oorzaak van de problemen die volwassenen met ADHD ervaren. Het doel van deze studie is de associatie tussen ADHD en executieve functies verder te onderzoeken. In deze thesis is onderzocht of er samenhang bestaat tussen ADHD en executieve functies, waarbij de nadruk op de executieve functie impulscontrole ligt. De mate van ADHD symptomen is hierbij gemeten aan de hand van de CAARS, de executieve functies zijn gemeten aan de hand van de EFI. De resultaten hebben aangetoond aan dat er een significante associatie is tussen de mate van ADHD symptomen en de executieve functies organisatie, impulscontrole en strategisch plannen. Daarnaast is er een associatie gevonden tussen de executieve functie impulscontrole en alle schalen van de CAARS, waaronder ADHD symptomen. Ook gaven de resultaten aan dat impulscontrole voor 15,6% ADHD symptomen kan voorspellen. Tenslotte komt uit de resultaten naar voren dat hoewel vrouwen iets beter zijn in impulscontrole dan mannen, dat een toename in ADHD symptomen bij vrouwen leidt tot minstens zoveel problemen met impulscontrole als bij mannen.
