Abstract
This cross-sectional study (N = 114) explored how recovery experiences (i.e., diversionary strategies to unwind from work during leisure time) are related to work engagement. Participants were asked to fill out a short online survey. Specifically, the study investigated whether the potential influence of recovery experiences on work engagement can be mediated by the self-regulatory ability of action-orientation during successful work performance. In line with my expectations, the proposed mediational research model was supported. An exploratory analysis showed that the variable of action-orientation during successful work performance was also able to moderate the relationship between recovery experiences and work engagement. People low in action-orientation (i.e., that get easily distracted when working on a task) seem to benefit more from higher levels of recovery experiences in terms of gaining work engagement. In contrast, this did not seem to matter for highly action- oriented individuals. These findings converge with past research but also contribute and add crucial nuances in the field of recovery research. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. Keywords: recovery experiences, work engagement, action-orientation
