Abstract

Teaching is a demanding job across contexts. In the Netherlands, primary school teachers experience the highest work pressure out of all job groups. High work pressure has led to high sick leave and dropout, which has increased teacher shortages and workload. Furthermore, one in four primary school teachers experiences Burnout symptoms. Using a sample of 1017 Dutch primary school teachers, this study aimed to investigate the construct validity of Burnout, Work Engagement, Teacher Empowerment and Feeling of Competency. Additionally, relations between these constructs were investigated. Using confirmatory factor analyses, the construct validity of these variables was found to be adequate. Relations generally held as hypothesized in the conceptual model based on the JD-R model. Recommendations for school boards are to improve Involvement in Decision-making of teachers, emphasizing clear communication, especially for female teachers, and to implement long-term interventions to develop teachers’ Feeling of Competency, particularly for young and inexperienced teachers.
