Abstract

Turkish-Dutch people are known to have a higher prevalence in mental disorders, well as consistently underuse mental health care services. This research aimed to study whether feelings of exclusion and negative meta-stereotypes are related to mental well-being and help-seeking behavior. Sixty-four Turkish-Dutch participants completed an online survey. Findings revealed that there is an indirect relation between feelings of exclusion and help-seeking behavior towards Dutch people, through the experience of positive (but not negative) meta-stereotypes. Mental well-being was not predicted by these variables. Although these findings cannot be generalized because of the small sample size, they could be used as a base for other studies and to stimulate the design of interventions to encourage help-seeking behavior among the Turkish-Dutch population. Keywords: exclusion, meta-stereotypes, help-seeking behavior, mental well-being, Turkish-Dutch population
