Abstract

Background: Victims and perpetrators of sexual violence can experience a broad variety of symptoms, which can lead to a sexual trauma. This trauma looks different in adults and children, but also differs between gender. Symptoms of sexual trauma decrease with time, but many effects might continue at a significant level. Aim: In this study, the relationship between sexual partner violence and sexual trauma in adults and children was examined. Additionally, it was investigated whether there is a gender difference in types of symptoms and the development, in both adults and children. Method: 1375 adults and 381 children filled out questionnaires after they encountered Safe Home. Results: A positive relationship between sexual partner violence and sexual trauma in adults was observed, and a positive relationship between sexual trauma in adults and sexual trauma in children. There was a partial gender difference in sexual trauma symptoms in adults. Conclusion: Data revealed a decrease in sexual trauma symptoms found in adults with time. This decrease in symptoms and difference between genders was not found in children. Further research could look into the development of sexual trauma symptoms in children and how they differ from adults.
