Abstract
Dropout, in the context of sports, is the early termination of a sports career, typically before reaching peak performance. As it demands more resources from clubs and athletes, the rising rate of dropouts has gained attention. In this study, we focus on autonomous motivation and team cohesion as potential causes. Specifically, we expected that team cohesion, particularly for athletes who have a high need for relatedness, will be negatively related to dropout intentions through low levels of autonomous motivation. Freshman teams of a local Dutch rowing club (N=29; 41% female) were examined. Linear regressions and PROCESS macro showed that variables do not correlate with each other. In our study, we did not find these linkages, therefore our theoretical model cannot be used in practice.
