Abstract

The present research sheds light on the effect of a mindfulness intervention on esport. Participants filled out the mindfulness FFMQ-15 (baer et al., 2006) at two-time points (t0 and t1) and played the computer-based game at two-time points as well. We hypothesized (H1) that people who were in the experimental condition (mindfulness exercise) would score higher over time on the FFMQ-15 compared to a control condition. Additionally, we hypothesized (H2) that participants who received the mindfulness intervention are more likely to perform better in a computer-based game, compared to a control condition when gaming experience is controlled for. The dependent variable was the maximum height participants were able to climb in a mountain climbing computer game. The first hypothesis was tested using a repeated measures ANOVA (n =19). Results showed, that the total score of the FFMQ-15 did not show a significant result in the compared conditions. The second hypothesis was tested in a repeated measures Analysis of Covariance (n = 19) and was a randomized controlled trial. The results of the present research do not support the hypothesis. Results indicate no significant effect for the experimental condition in the height score of the participants when gaming experience was controlled for compared to the control group. An explanatory repeated measures ANOVA was conducted and significant results were found. Meaning, participants in the experimental condition scored higher in the game compared to the control condition. Noteworthy implications of this explanatory analysis were discussed to lay the foundation of future research ideas to properly investigate esport in relation to mindfulness.
