Abstract
The last decades migration numbers have increased in regions like the United States and Europe. Migration brings challenges for migrants, leading to stressors for migrant youth as well. These stressors constrain migrant youths’ educational outcomes, nevertheless some manage to succeed despite such stressors. These migrant youths exhibit educational resilience. Although there is no consensus on the conceptualization of resilience across disciplines, it has been reported that all disciplines share several principles. The current study investigated what is known about factors contributing to migrant youths’ ability to exhibit educational resilient behavior. The study used a scoping review design, identifying eight studies on the subject through a selection process. The results show that migrant youth share a host of promotive factors for educational resilience with the general youth population, however some promotive factors could be used to specifically target the development of educational resilience in migrant youth. Examples are past personal experiences, new opportunities as motivation, and biculturalism. Furthermore participation in extracurricular activities, volunteering, and support by family, teachers and peers has been found to have a promotive effect. The results have implications for future research, families, and schools. To counter the lack of studies into this subject, an increase of research is necessary to increase the knowledge on the topic. Migrant parents can improve the development of educational resilience by supporting their children’s’ school activities. Schools could achieve this by creating a supportive environment at school and by promoting participation in extracurricular activities and volunteering.
