Abstract
This research took place after the ‘Academische Opleiding Leraar Basisonderwijs’ (AOLB) in Groningen pondered the following research question: ‘Why do adolescents chose to follow an academic teacher’s education?’ The research investigates the underlying motives present for a teaching profession and looks into a possible difference between men and women. At this point in time there is a dire shortage of teachers in the Netherlands. One of the main causes for this is the low supply of recently graduated teachers. To be able to recruit new male and female students for a teacher’s education at the ‘Pabo’ or ‘AOLB’, it is of strong importance that the underlying motives to study a teaching profession are brought to light. Through the conduction of a cross-sectionally quantitative designed research, these motives are determined. The Fit-Choice questionnaire has been answered by students that study at the ‘Pabo’ or ‘AOLB’ and was filled in by 95 respondents of which 17 male and 78 female. A T-test was conducted on each of the 18 constructs. Based on these tests a significant difference corresponding the concepts of ‘working with adolescents/children’ and ‘social discouraging’ became clear between male and female respondents. It is important to note that the concept of ‘working with adolescents/children’ was not reliable. For future research attention should be paid to the reliability of the study. By adding items to the questionnaire the reliability can be increased.
