Abstract
Student well-being is under pressure. As a consequence of this it can have a negative impact on student happiness and their academic performances. Teachers can have an influence on student well-being and they can implement activities to improve it. The sense of belonging is important for student well-being, so in this thesis the focus is on relational approaches that teachers can implement. The research question in this qualitative study is: “What are, within the context of relational approaches in terms of improving student well-being, university teachers’ attitudes, knowledge, and self-efficacy beliefs, and to what extent do they undertake, or are they open to undertake, activities to improve student well-being?" Based on twelve interviews with university teachers, it appears that they all express concerns about a low student well-being. The majority of the teachers see a role for themselves to improve student well-being and thus have a positive attitude towards this. However, the teachers indicate that their knowledge and self-efficacy beliefs are low and that they need training and knowledge enhancement for implementing relational approaches to improve student well-being. Nevertheless, university teachers implement a variety of activities appropriate to the relational approach. The results show that teachers promote positive teacher-student contact by being open to students and having conversations with them. In addition, teachers also encourage student-student contact by having them work together and putting them together in groups. In this way, the teachers encourage developing a sense of belonging among the students. For follow-up research, it is important to investigate whether the students themselves are perceiving these activities actually as improving their well-being.
