Abstract
Intercultural competence (ICC) becomes increasingly important with the globalization of the world. This paper investigates the mediating role of ICC and inclusion to explain the relationship between cultural metacognition and well-being. To examine this relationship a mixed-methods approach was used. First-year psychology students completed questionnaires with a total of 112 items and were interviewed to get additional insights on this relationship. A technical limitation did make it not possible to assess inclusion and therefore, loneliness was used. The proposed mediating model was not significant and consequently, loneliness was removed a mediator, resulting in a simple mediation model where ICC mediates the relationship between cultural metacognition and well-being. This revised model was statistically significant. Similarly, the interviews showed the relevancy of cultural metacognition on ICC but the assessment for well-being and inclusion were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper concludes with the importance of cultural metacognition for ICC as well as its potential benefits for well-being. Implications include ways to improve the well-being for first-year students through intercultural competence programs.
