Abstract

This Study is concerned with the contribution of different cognitive motivation factors (Academic Motivation, Curiosity, Need for Cognition) towards explaining flow experiences in academic settings. Prior research indicates positive implications when entering flow states over different settings and showed indications towards relationships between the cognitive motivation factors and flow. We formulated two research questions with each having three designated Hypotheses. H1 to H3 investigate the primary research question and the contribution of the mentioned cognitive motivation factors to flow in academic settings. H4 to H6 were concerned with the second research question and explored the relationship between each of the cognitive motivation factors. We draw a sample of first-year psychology students (N = 370) and conducted a multiple linear regression analysis, while checking for correlations between our variables. We found significant results when it comes to the contribution of our factors of interest and showed that except for two sub-dimensions of Academic Motivation and Curiosity, all dimensions of our concepts relate to each other. Our study shows that cognitive motivation factors play a important role in explaining flow experiences in studies. Support for prior existing research in this field was found. However did we find a interesting relationship between stress tolerance and flow, that lacks existing research and needs to be investigated further.
