Abstract

Hyperfocus studies to date have insufficiently explored its nature within an academic context. The present study aims to investigate possible connections in several cognitive motivators (Need for Cognition, Joyous Exploration, Sensitivity Deprivation, and Intrinsic Motivation-to know) with academic hyperfocus while briefly looking into possible correlations between the motivators. Three hundred seventy-four psychology students with a mean age of 19.76 years were investigated from the University of Groningen. Participants' scores for each cognitive motivator and academic hyperfocus were gathered using their respective questionnaires. Sensitivity Deprivation (SD) and Intrinsic Motivation to Know (IM-TK) both significantly contributed to the prediction of academic hyperfocus, with Joyous Exploration (JE) and Need for Cognition (NFC) suggesting insignificant contributions towards the frequency of academic hyperfocus. Additionally, the cognitive motivators were at least moderately correlated with one another. Although not without limitations, these surprising findings provide a valuable blueprint for hyperfocus research in the academic context and some insight into its possible underlying nature.
