Abstract

We live in a social, politically charged world that still battles with institutionalized discrimination, and inclusion of diverse individuals. Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) with the role and in the position of equipping learners with knowledge, attitudes and skills to function in the 21st century as well informed participative global citizens are in a position of dismantling institutionalised discrimination, and promoting the decolonization of education as well as diversity and inclusion (DI) initiatives. This study was a first step in implementation science, aimed at understanding Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) students' perspective on DI in their Dutch HEI. A total of 30 participants were interviewed on their perception of six main aspects regarding DI; 1) definitions conceptualization, 2) DI in education, 4) DI in support services, 5) extracurricular activities, 6) in student university life and 7) perception of HEI strive for DI. The interviews were analysed using content analysis. The results revealed that there is a mixture of perceptions and experiences regarding DI in Dutch HEI from BIPOC students, however, there is agreement that there is a lot more that universities could be doing in supporting them in their university experiences. It is recommended that HEI are more intentional about their DI initiatives and that this can be achieved through implementation of critical global citizenship education, lifelong learning, professionalization skills, and general pedagogical strategies amongst others into HEI curricula.
