Abstract
The problem under investigation was whether organizations receive the benefits from proactive behavior in the workplace once switching to a blended work design. The subsequent hypothesis, therefore, was whether the construct of personal initiative was positively increased in blended working arrangements, which is considered to be a flexible and autonomous work design. As a moderating variable, we considered proactive personality. A vignette describing two organizations with alternative work arrangements, together with questionnaires on perceived personal initiative and proactive personality was administered to 219 university students. The study results show support that blended working arrangements influence personal initiative in an organization, which can ultimately impact organizational functions and performance. Based on the results of this study, however, a proactive personality cannot be considered a driving force for personal initiative for blended work arrangements.
