Abstract

Technology-induced work interruptions are IT-based events that disturb attention and distract employees from their current tasks. Work interruptions adversely affect employees (e.g., lower job satisfaction). In this research, we investigated the relationship between technology- induced work interruptions and job satisfaction mediated by state mindfulness. Mindfulness is an interesting mediator because it has many positive effects, such as higher well-being. In total, a sample of 109 employees participated in our baseline questionnaire, and 89 also answered daily questionnaires over a span of two weeks. We used the data of these 89 participants to calculate the descriptive statistics and conduct this study's analyses. To test the hypotheses, we conducted a regression analysis using PROCESS Procedure for SPSS. The results showed that state mindfulness did not positively mediate the relationship between technology-induced work interruptions and job satisfaction. Furthermore, we found that technology-induced work interruptions did not negatively relate to job satisfaction or state mindfulness. Lastly, the results showed that state mindfulness positively relates to job satisfaction. This research adds to the existing literature by showing that it is crucial to distinguish between the different forms of mindfulness and work interruptions. In addition, it provides a better understanding of the relationship between technology-induced work interruptions and job satisfaction.
