Abstract

Today, more and more cars include some form of automated driving functionalities. This has both advantages and disadvantages: Automation reduces mental workload and frees mental capacity but it has also been associated with decreased situation awareness. This could have fatal consequences and even lead to fatalities. To investigate this trade-off between improved mental workload and decreased situation awareness, this study set out to answer the question of how different degrees of automation affect drivers’ mental workload and situation awareness. It was hypothesized that increasing automation is associated both with decreased mental workload and less situation awareness. In a driving simulator, 29 participants were asked to drive the same route under five conditions with increasing automation and report their mental workload and situation awareness through a questionnaire. Opposed to what was hypothesized, this study did not find any difference between the conditions both with regard to mental workload and situation awareness.
