Abstract
Considering the climate crisis, this study investigates variables determining collective climate action intentions, including both activist and individual behaviors. The predictive value of age and humor styles were of interest. The following hypotheses were investigated: (H1) collective action intentions are greater in the affiliative humor condition than in the disparaging humor condition, (H2) age has a negative correlation with intention to engage in climate change action, and (H3) the difference between the collective action intentions in the two humor conditions increases with age. A convenience sample (n=428) took part in an online study, and participants were randomly assigned to be exposed to one of two humor styles. Data of 327 participants were analyzed and no significant results were found for any of the hypotheses. As part of an exploratory analysis, individual and activist behavioral intentions were investigated separately. The results indicated a weak negative correlation between age and activist behavioral intention, and a weak to moderate positive correlation between age and individual action intentions. There was no significant difference between the means of individual or activist intentions in the humor conditions. A significant interaction effect between age and humor style on individual action intention was found, with individual intentions increasing with age in the disparaging humor condition, and no age difference in the affiliative condition. Limitations of the design (e.g., humor manipulation) and the sample (e.g., representativeness), as well as proposals for future research and implications of the results were discussed. Keywords: climate change, collective action, humor styles, age
