Abstract
Abstract The objective of this paper is to understand the mediating factors between digital technologies and their use for educational purposes. An embodied cognition perspective is considered, as we believe that mind, body and environment all play an important role in the effectiveness of learning. The embodied and extended cognition perspective provides a framework and has an explanatory role for the difference in learning outcomes between on-site and online education. The literature on embodied cognition suggests that the mind does not operate on its own, and is in fact, restricted in its interpretation of the world by the limitations of the body. The paper considers the idea that students have better learning outcomes in a traditional setting due to the embodied experience that comes from gestures and the physicality provided by the environment and instructors. Implications for future online environments designed with education in mind are discussed. The analysis is qualitative, in which four interviews about the experience of learning with digital technologies have been conducted.
