Abstract
This quantitative study aims to research the relationship between power construal of leaders and their respective conflict management strategies. This study was carried out with the use of questionnaires on a convenience sample in the Netherlands. We aim to find out whether leaders construing their power as opportunity versus responsibility influences the type of conflict management strategy used. It is hypothesized that those construing their power as opportunity will use more destructive strategies (forcing), whereas leaders construing their power as responsibility will make use of constructive conflict strategies such as problem solving and compromising. It is hypothesized that this effect will be moderated by gender as men are assumed to view power more as opportunity versus responsibility compared to women and are therefore more likely to use destructive strategies. The findings in our research partially support the hypotheses mentioned above. Keywords: power construal, conflict management strategies, opportunity versus responsibility, constructive versus destructive strategies, problem solving, forcing, compromise
