Abstract

Abstract Little is known about the risk factors for developing and maintaining Avoidance Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). To explore the impact of the behavior of parents as a risk factor, the following research question was posed: "What is the effect of parental behavior on the severity of symptoms of ARFID?". To assess the parents behavior towards the child, the VSOG, NOSI-K, and the PFSQ questionnaires and the PARDI interview were administered. With the results of the PARDI interview it was possible to calculate an ARFID severity score, which is the dependent variable. The research population (N = 22) were children between two and nineteen years old and were all suspected of having ARFID and were seeking treatment in Seys Centra or Accare. In this research there was no association found between the parents giving rewards, applying punishment or control, emotional feeding, parental stress and parental eating pattern on the severity score of ARFID symptoms of the child. However, an association was found between encouraging to eat more and ARFID, F (1,20) = 7.213, p = .014, R2 = 0.265. The relationship between encouragement and ARFID symptoms is different than expected, since it was found that more encouragement is related to more ARFID symptoms. The result is an indication that frequent encouragement is related to the degree of ARFID symptoms. There are several reasons why the effects that were expected were not found. The biggest limitation of this study is that it attempted to find an association in a small group with expected limited distribution. This study implies that future research should be done in a larger group of participants, who are then compared to a control group who do not have ARFID symptoms.
