Abstract

Vocabulary learning is effortful and time consuming. There are different ways help people make learning vocabulary of a foreign language more easy. A possible way to do this is by adding image as illustrations. Image memorability is the phenomenon that some images are better remembered than others. In this study, the influence of the presence and memorability if images on vocabulary learning was. Forty participants, 33 women and 7 men, learned 40 Dutch translations of Finnish words. Half of the participants had a version with an image, counter-balancing between memorable and non-memorable, and the other half had a version without an image. There were three testphases, after each word, after each block and after the whole test. A two-way ANOVA showed there was no significant effect of the presence of images on vocabulary learning. Also, the condition with images showed no significant effect for the influence of the memorability of these images. This study had some limitations. The sample size was small, the study was done online and the difference in memorability for the memorable and non-memorable images was not great. Last, only concrete, instead of abstract words, were used and this could have had an influence on the effect of the added image
