Abstract
Despite the current migration population rising (IOM, 2022) there is very little research about their life goals and how it affects their well-being. Because of the little previous research, we are aiming to create a questionnaire, which assesses the life goals of first-generation migrants. Previous research by Tòth-Bos et al. (2020) aimed to fill this gap and asked 288 migrants to report their life goals. From the approximately 800 answers, seven subscales emerged, which covered goal categories such as achievement, security, and personal development. Based on these categories we created a self-report questionnaire following the scale development procedure by Boateng et al. (2018), who proposed the following three phases for scale development: item development, scale development, and scale evaluation. In this thesis we focused on the item development phase, which includes identifying the domains of the questionnaire, generating the items, and an evaluation of the items by experts in the field of migration and questionnaire development. In total, five experts with experience in psychological scales or the goal domains gave their feedback on our tentative questionnaire. Based on the feedback we were able to create a preliminary questionnaire with six to nine items per goal domain. Furthermore, we got an insight into the application of the questionnaire, which future research will have to decide on. The process of questionnaire creation is not finished, therefore future research will have to test this questionnaire with a focus group and administer it to first-generation migrants. Keywords: migrants, scale development, life goals, cognitive interviews
