Abstract

Good sports leadership is needed for athletes to develop and perform in their sport. Sports leaders are setting and shaping the environment, which affects youth athletes in their learning as well as in their well-being. Due to different supportive and suppressive factors, good sports leadership to youth athletes is not yet framed by a specific leadership style. Hence, a systematic review was conducted to examine supportive and suppressive factors in youth sports leadership, i.e., for athletes age 10-18. The terms “adolescent”, “youth”, “puberty”, “young athletes” in combination with “leadership in sports”, “coaching”, and “coaching qualities” were used as keywords. The final selection included 13 studies focusing on a variety of supportive and suppressive factors in youth sports leadership. The different factors were summarized and compared to the different leadership styles, based on Judge and Piccolo (2004). Most studies show the need for autonomy supportive behavior from the sports leader and the dislike of controlling behaviors from the sports leader. The results show that a transformational leadership style followed by transactional leadership style covered most of the needs of youth athletes. The included studies show a lack of input from non-western countries as well as results from individual sports cases. Implications for practice, policy and future research are discussed upon.
