Abstract

Decision making (DM) is an important skill in talent development in soccer. Virtual reality (VR) looks to be a promising tool to stimulate DM. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to analyse the influence of VR training on DM of elite soccer players in different age categories. 28 elite soccer players between 15 and 21 years old were randomly assigned to an intervention (n= 14) or control (n=14) group. Both groups participated in a pre- and post-measurement session, whereas the intervention group also joined a three-session VR training. During all sessions the participants got to see 15 situations as a right central defender in a 11 vs 11 situation from a first-person perspective. In these situations, the simulation moves all players for five seconds, after which four answer planes pop up in the VR environment and the participant has to choose the best answer as quickly as possible. Results showed that both accuracy and speed of DM improved between the pre- and post-measurement. As regards accuracy of DM, no significant differences between the intervention group and control group were found. As to speed of DM, the intervention group shows a greater improvement in speed of DM between the pre- and post-test than the control group. Lastly, no differences in improvement in DM between age groups were found. Taken together, this study supports the positive effect of VR training on speed of DM. Therefore, VR training looks like a promising strategy to improve DM skills of young soccer players, but future research is needed to close the gap between the VR environment and the football pitch.
