Abstract

Given the widespread misuse and -interpretation of statistics amongst psychological scientists, improvement of Statistics education for Psychology students is a relevant issue. The goal of this thesis was twofold. First, to find out to what extent Psychology students at the UG perceive their Statistics courses as relevant, and whether this perceived relevance is related to their performance. Second, to see whether the addition of context improves performance on knowledge questions assessing two concepts central to NHST. A questionnaire was distributed amongst students and yielded 158 responses. Students valued the relevance of their Statistics courses relatively high. Perceived relevance and performance were weakly correlated. The addition of context turned out to have an opposing effect for the two knowledge questions that were assessed, in one case enhancing and in the other reducing correct responses, although neither effect was really strong. Because of research limitations such as low construct validity, these results do not allow any strong conclusions. Nevertheless, the present research shows that perceived relevance and contextualization do have some effect on students’ comprehension of statistics, the exact nature of which could be investigated in further research.
