Abstract

Over the realm of the past decades, cosmetic surgeries have increased in popularity. Likewise, the common use of facial recognition algorithms has been normalized, such as for unlocking one’s phone or verifying bank transfers. It has been shown, that cosmetic surgeries pose a challenge to these algorithms. Within a different domain, research has been focusing on why we remember certain faces better than others – investigating face memorability. The impact of cosmetic surgery on face memorability and on human face recognition is investigated. Utilizing before and after images for common cosmetic surgeries within a face memory game, differences in memorability and human face recognition were assessed in the current study. Two conditions, a change and a no-change condition, investigated facial recognition and face memorability, respectively. The participants were exposed to images, one at a time, and asked to indicate whether they had seen the presented face before. Depending on the condition, the target images would present the same face, either pre or post-surgery. The results showed that humans, despite their superior holistic facial perception struggled to identify faces post-surgery. Furthermore, there was no evidence that cosmetic surgery had an impact on face memorability. This suggests that the memorability of the specific faces tested is not influenced by changes from cosmetic surgery. In regard to facial recognition it is plausible that humans require more training to identify altered faces. It should be mentioned, that the memorability of the target faces itself might have influenced the results. The present findings require further research.
