Abstract
Comic posters saw a rapid increase as educational material for teaching purposes and offer a valuable learning method in the classroom. Comic posters can offer a reduction in information overload compared to text documents. Past studies showed the effectiveness of comic posters for educational purposes. However, a case-based analysis on elements of comic posters and how these elements together might influence cognitive processing is lacking. The value of comic posters, due to the lack of research, has been recently questioned. Document designers might lack a design framework in producing comic posters that offer optimal processing results. This study determined which comic poster design elements are effective or not for optimal cognitive processing. A corpus of comic first aid posters on the Heimlich maneuver was used to assess their quality in terms of text-picture integration, element-based cognitive processing outcomes, and integrity regarding guidelines on the Heimlich maneuver. A quantitative analysis was performed with an annotation scheme and an educational framework to determine possible cognitive processing results in terms of the split-attention effect. A qualitative thematic analysis was also performed for further insights. The results revealed partly unbalanced integration of text-picture elements and text-dominant elements were found. The design guidelines for optimal processing and for a correct performance of the Heimlich maneuver were inconsistently used. The corpus might therefore not be optimal in terms of maximizing processing results and minimizing the split-attention effect. Further research among participants should be carried out to determine its effectiveness in practice. Nevertheless, this study represents a first step in shaping a framework for educational document designers, who should balance text-picture integration and implement design guidelines consistently.
