Abstract

Partially due to changes in the music industry, artists often have to deal with an entrepreneurial and artistic identity simultaneously, this may cause tensions. This thesis addresses the relationship between three identity regulation strategies and identity balance and the moderating role of financial insecurity on these relations. It was hypothesized that the identity differentiation and integration strategy would be negatively related to identity balance and the paradoxical identity strategy would be positively related to identity balance. Furthermore, I hypothesized that financial insecurity would moderate the strength of the relation between the identity differentiation and integration strategy, such that when financial insecurity was high, these relations would be stronger (i.e., more negative) than when financial insecurity was low. Financial insecurity was not expected to moderate the relation between the paradoxical identity strategy and identity balance. In a survey study of (N = 89) artists, I found that the identity differentiation strategy and identity balance were negatively related. The identity integration and paradoxical identity strategy were positively related to identity balance. Besides that, financial insecurity moderated the strength of the relation between the identity differentiation strategy such that when financial insecurity was high, the negative relation was stronger. Financial insecurity did not moderate the relations between the identity integration, and the paradoxical identity strategy. These results indicate which identity regulation strategy artists adopt relates to their identity balance.
