Abstract

Abstract This narrative analyses, reviews literature about social unity within the context of both synchronized and complementary joint action. Literature was collected by consulting both PsycINFO and Google Scholar after determining the methods of this paper. The results indicated a variety of terms resembling social unity. These synonyms for social unity could be divided into four main distinctive terms/categories: ‘interpersonal liking’, ‘team synergy’, ‘group solidarity and group cohesion’ and ‘entitativity’. The way in which these terms are measured show different mediators that influence the level of social unity individuals experience. When measuring the level of social unity felt, one needs to keep in mind the term used to describe social unity within a joint action context. The same goes for picking a method of measuring social unity, as social unity seems to mostly be used as an umbrella term, which is why one needs to be aware of the full meaning of social unity before knowing how to measure one part of it. Keywords: ‘social unity’, ‘join action’, ‘synchronization’, ‘interpersonal coordination’, ‘interpersonal liking’, ‘solidarity’, ‘cohesion’, ‘team synergy’, ‘entitativity’
