Abstract

Objective: The present study examined the relations between the cognitive learning strategies of self-regulated learning and ADHD symptoms in college students, and what role executive functions might have in this. It distinguishes between attention deficit symptoms and hyperactive/impulsive symptoms. Method: 160 psychology students, aged 18 to 35 (M = 19.7, SD = 2.1), from the University of Groningen completed two different questionnaires, consisting of the CAARS, MSLQ and EFI. Results: A significant, negative correlation was found between ADHD symptoms and cognitive learning strategies (r = -.17, p < 0.05). However, it was found that when controlling for executive functions, there was no longer a significant relationship between ADHD symptoms and cognitive learning strategies (r = .042, p = .596). When controlling for ADHD symptoms, there was still a significant, positive relation seen between executive functions and cognitive learning strategies (r = .354, p = < .001). Across symptom domains, when controlling for attention deficit symptoms, there was no significant correlation between hyperactive/impulsive symptoms and cognitive learning strategies (r = .040, p = .620). When controlling for hyperactive/impulsive symptoms there was a significant, negative correlation between attention deficit symptoms and cognitive learning strategies (r = -.206, p = .009). Conclusion: The present study found a negative relationship between ADHD symptoms and cognitive learning strategies of self-regulated learning, which is largely explained by problems with executive functions. Thereby, students with attention deficit symptoms in particular seem to have more difficulty with these learning strategies.
