Abstract

Due to teacher shortages, the profession has become more accessible for people who have pursued other careers first: so-called second-career teachers. However, the retention of both second- and first-career teachers is an issue as they tend to leave the profession within the early stages of their career. Prior research has stated the importance of collegial support as well as job satisfaction for teachers’ intention to quit in the case of first-career teachers, but little is known about the realities of second career teachers. This study examines the role two specific characteristics of collegial support, quality and frequency, play in job satisfaction and intention to quit of early-career first- and second-career teachers. It was found that the frequency, but even more so the quality of support positively influence job satisfaction and, in turn, decrease teachers’ intention to quit. The patterns in these results were similar for first- and second-career teachers, but the effects are consistently stronger for second-career teachers. Keywords: teacher retention, collegial support, job satisfaction, intention to quit, second-career teachers
