Abstract
This research investigates the development of critical-thinking skills to improve academic performance in bachelor’s degree programs in nursing. The Watson-Glaser Critical-Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) test is used to assess the critical-thinking skills of bachelor of nursing students. These participants are divided into commencing and graduating groups, and their scores on the WGCTA test are compared to determine whether the scores are higher in the graduating group than in the commencing group in order to track the development of critical-thinking skills within the educational route (full-time, part-time or FastSwitch). The critical-thinking scores are also compared to determine whether better critical-thinking skills might result in improved academic performance. An online questionnaire is used to collect demographic information and self-reported course results; the WGCTA is attached. Although the results indicate no significant differences, the study contributes to the discussion about and insights into the development of critical-thinking skills to improve academic performance.
