Abstract

Abstract. Background. Suicide is worldwide one of the main causes of death in adolescence and young adults. There is a group of young people that die by suicide out-of-the-blue. These suicides occur abruptly and unexpectedly, either because signals were missed or were not there until (shortly before) the suicide. The aim of this study was to systematically review the literature about the characteristics, relations, psychology and the course of life of young people that committed suicide out-of-the-blue. Method. Six databases (ERIC, SocIndex, PsychINFO, Medline, Scopus and Web of Science) were systematically searched. The included papers came from this search, an expert, the exploratory literature search and the references and citations of the retrieved papers. The included studies were assessed on their quality. Data on the country, sample, method and the relevant results were extracted. Narrative data synthesis was used to present the results. Results. A total of fourteen studies were included. The data of these studies were divided into categories: demographic characteristics, personal characteristics, course of life, psychology, relations and communication and interpretation of suicidal feelings and plans. Conclusion. Out-of-the-blue suicides among young people often are an acute reaction to a negative life event, and although they are viewed as out-of-the-blue, in many cases the person tried to communicate his suicidal thoughts and/or plans previously. In very little cases there was a history of psychiatric diagnoses or long-term problems. More research on the characteristics, relations, psychology and course of life of young people that die by suicide is needed.
