Abstract

Students in the Dutch senior general education track choose between four study profiles: Economy and Society (E&S), Culture and Society (C&S), Science and Health (S&H) and Science and Technology (S&T). Fewer students are picking the S&T and C&S profiles, resulting in an underrepresentation of students. Furthermore, not much research has been done on the subject. This study therefore focuses on the views of students on the four different study profiles, to give explanations for this underrepresentation of students and to contribute to the existing scientific knowledge on the subject. The research question central in this study is: “what are senior general education student’s views on the four study profiles”. A qualitative research method was applied where semi-structured interviews with 37 senior general education students were analyzed. Results showed that there were four main views on the students profiles: (1) the C&S study profile is perceived as easier compared to the other profiles, because math was not an mandatory course (2) the S&T study profile is seen as difficult, because advanced mathematics is mandatory (3) the E&S and S&H study profiles are seen as standard and less specific study profiles (4) the E&S and S&H study profiles are also seen as study profiles that offer diverse career perspectives. Because of limiting factors, further research should involve more students and assemble a team of researchers to analyze the interviews.
