Abstract

The purpose of this study is to better understand 1) whether fathers and mothers within the same family differ in the extent of gender sensitive parenting and 2) whether there is a relationship between the perceptions of parents about the father role and their extent of gender sensitive parenting. A quantitative, cross-sectional study was conducted. Data was collected through questionnaires from 104 families (104 fathers, 104 mothers and 104 3-year old children) from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The extent of gender sensitive parenting was measured using the Child Rearing Sex Role Attitude Scale (CRSRAS; Freeman, 2007), which contains 19 items. The perceptions of parents about the father role was measured using the Role of the Father Questionnaire (Palkovitz 1984), which contains 15 items. The results show that fathers and mothers do differ significantly in their extent of gender sensitive parenting (p <.01). In addition, evidence was found for a significant positive relationship between the perceptions of parents about the father role and their extent of gender sensitive parenting (p < .01). It is therefore concluded that 1) fathers and mothers in this study differ significantly in their extent of gender sensitive parenting and 2) the perceptions of parents about the father role are significantly positive related to their extent of gender sensitive parenting. Limitations of this study include that the sample of parents is less diverse and therefore moderate generalizability and the use of an unreliable instrument (ROFQ). This may have influenced the results. Therefore, recommendations for future research are to recruit a more diverse sample of parents and to use a reliable instrument. Implications are to develop interventions for fathers that focus on increasing their extent of gender sensitive parenting and to include the perceptions of parents about the father role as a factor when developing these interventions.
