Abstract

While the link between childhood maltreatment and psychopathology is relatively well-established in research, rather little is known about the negative consequences of childhood maltreatment on labor market participation. This study aims to investigate whether exposure to interparental violence in childhood is associated with lower labor market participation in young adulthood (H1) and whether this association is mediated by internalizing and externalizing problems (H2). The study was conducted using synthetic data based on the TRAILS study, a longitudinal cohort study in the Netherlands (N = 1236). Exposure to interparental violence was measured with the Traumatic Youth Questionnaire at age 16. Psychopathology was measured with the Adult Self Report at age 19. Labor market participation was operationalized as the NEET status and was self-reported at age 22. H1 was analyzed with logistic regression. H2 was analyzed following the Baron & Kenny (1986) approach for mediation analysis. The analysis did not result in any support for the association between witnessing interparental violence and NEET (OR = 1.32, 95% CI [.60 - 2.91], p = .488). Yet, witnessing interparental violence was positively associated with externalizing (β = .15, 95% CI [.10 - .20], p <.001) and internalizing problems (β = .17, 95% CI [.10 - .23], p <.001). In conclusion, although the association between exposure to interparental violence and NEET remains unclear, this study expands the evidence for the association between exposure to interparental violence and psychopathology. Keywords: interparental violence, psychopathology, NEET status
