Abstract

Blame within organizations can have far-reaching consequences, affecting morale, teamwork, and overall productivity. Specifically, the tendency to assign blame rapidly and without thorough consideration, known as swift blame, are hasty judgments with potential negative outcomes. Despite its significance, empirical research on the underlying mechanisms of swift blame remains limited, relying largely on assumptions. It was previously theorized that swift blame attributions are influenced by system 1 thinking (i.e., intuitive and automatic cognitive process), as proposed by the dual processing theory. However, the current literature lacks robust empirical findings in this regard. Addressing this research gap, the present study aimed to examine the potential relation between system 1 thinking, operationalized using the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT), and engagement in swift blame. We conducted a vignette-based study involving 182 participants, who were presented with a plot depicting an ambiguous case featuring an allegedly poor-performing employee. The results of the study revealed a non-consistent relation between swift blame and system 1 thinking. This thesis will discuss the implications of these results and their significance in understanding the underlying mechanism of swift blame within organizations.
