Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the validity of scouts’ assessments of soccer players based on the “lens model”. Eighteen scouts from a professional Dutch soccer club judged the value of 50 players. For each player, scouts received information about four separate skills – tackles, sprinting speed, interceptions, and game insight – and subsequently provided their market value judgment. For each scout, these judgments were regressed on the skill values resulting in the “model of the scout”, representing how the scout weighs the skills on average in their judgment. The most important result was that for every scout, their model was more valid than their own judgments in estimating the actual market value. This is due to inconsistent weighting of information across players, which is a form of noise reducing the validity of the judgment. We recommend removing this noise by using formulas for combining information to improve performance assessments.
