Abstract

This research is a systematic literature review comparing the prevalence, nature, and impact of sexual abuse within out-of-home care in the Netherlands to that in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia. Additionally, the approach to preventing sexual abuse within this out-of-home care in the different countries is analyzed. An extensive search through multiple scientific databases led to a selection of 29 relevant sources. The research showed that there are both similarities and differences in the prevalence, nature, and impact of sexual abuse in out-of-home care in the four countries discussed. In terms of prevention, the four countries show a common focus on creating safe environments, improving the competencies of professionals, and empowering children and young people. However, there are also notable differences between the countries in terms of preventive interventions and conducting independent research into these interventions. This study underscores the need for global attention to this issue and suggests that future research should focus on improving reporting systems, creating supportive environments for victims, and developing effective preventive measures aimed at both adult caregivers and fellow residents. Although there were limitations in terms of available literature and comparability of studies, this research provides valuable insights to better understand and address this issue. Key words: sexual abuse, child sexual abuse, out-of-home care, best practices
