Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in teleworking. Organizations are offering telework options to attract IT workers. Understanding attitudes towards telework, especially among supervisors, is crucial due to supervisors’ unique challenges in managing remote teams. This study aimed to investigate attitudes towards telework among supervisors and non- supervisors in the IT sector, focusing on the impact of supervision, group size, and age. A total of 579 Dutch IT workers, including supervisors and non-supervisors, participated in the study. Quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires, and qualitative data were obtained from open-ended questions. The results showed that supervisors had a less positive attitude towards telework, primarily due to concerns about the social drawbacks. The results also showed that supervisors of large groups had a less positive work-related attitude towards telework compared to supervisors of small groups, suggesting that supervisors of large groups are more concerned about productivity. Age did not have a significant moderating effect on the relationship between supervision and attitudes towards telework. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of addressing supervisors' concerns about the social drawbacks of teleworking. Organizations can develop tailored telework guidance for supervisors and non-supervisors, as well as for supervisors of small and large groups, to optimize telework benefits and attract IT workers. This study contributes to the existing literature on telework attitudes and offers practical implications for organizations navigating the teleworking landscape.
