Abstract

This thesis covers a study of the educational integration of unaccompanied minors in the Netherlands focusing on their educational aspirations, educational scope, and trajectories. This thesis had three objectives, namely, to understand (1) what kind of educational aspirations unaccompanied minors hold in terms of career aspirations; (2) the scope of the possibilities these youth experience in achieving these aspirations (affordances); and (3) how these perceived possibilities change youth’ aspirations over time. My research is carried out through semi-structured interviews with 7 unaccompanied minors and 2 educators. Thematic analysis is employed. My results indicate that educational aspirations were varied and influenced by their hobbies and family support or encouragement. The scope of possibilities youth experience is expanded by opportunities created by migration and assistance provided by institutions for integration. Meanwhile the precarity of asylum and the prevailing uncertainties cause a hindrance in their imagination and perceived scope of possibilities. Moreover, this precarity also limited how these aspirations changed over time.. Suggestions for future studies is to adapt a longitudinal approach to follow the impact of scope upon aspirations.
