Abstract

The effect of working alliance on coaching effectiveness is better understood than that of motivation. This thesis investigated the effect of motivation on coaching effectiveness, and the impact of working alliance on this relationship, using a longitudinal design. A sample of 38 student-coachees completed three waves of surveys examining coaching effectiveness, motivation, and working alliance after receiving coaching sessions. Simple linear regressions were used to examine the effects of motivation and working alliance on coaching effectiveness for each wave. Mediation analyses tested the influence of working alliance per wave and longitudinally. It was proposed that 1) motivation predicts coaching effectiveness in all waves 2) working alliance predicts coaching effectiveness in all waves 3) working alliance mediates the relationship between motivation and coaching effectiveness in all waves 4) motivation from wave 1 and coaching effectiveness from wave 3 are longitudinally mediated by working alliance in wave 2. The following results were found: Motivation predicted coaching effectiveness in waves 2 and 3. Working alliance predicted coaching effectiveness throughout all waves. Working alliance mediated motivation and coaching effectiveness in waves 2 and 3. Working alliance did not longitudinally mediate motivation and coaching effectiveness. The results stress the role of working alliance as the strongest predictor of coaching outcomes. Working alliance could also mediate motivation and coaching effectiveness, however not longitudinally. For coaches, it is recommended to consider the positive impact of working alliance on session outcomes at all times, but also consider motivation as a predictor that impacts coaching effectiveness over time.
