Abstract

This thesis explores the discourse around burnout in the last six years (2017-2022) in France and the conditions that allow it to be an often-used concept, using a thematic analysis (TA) based on newspaper articles from Le Monde and Le Figaro. It looks for repeated patterns and new developments around burnout throughout the years. It is theoretically based on Ian Hacking’s ecological niche framework (Hacking, 1998). Hacking posits that some mental illnesses thrive at a certain time and place due to a concatenation of elements that are in favor of it but may thrive less at other times. These elements are found through the four vectors composing his ecological niche framework: medical taxonomy, observability, cultural polarity, and release. Five themes, a main one with a subtheme, and four smaller ones have been named. A detailed account of each theme is given before looking at how the themes fit into the four vectors. It is concluded that although the ecological niche framework offers a new kind of understanding of burnout’s current importance in France, burnout seems to thrive despite a not-so-strong medical taxonomy.
