Abstract

Background: The treatment of depression could potentially be improved by incorporating an experience sampling method (ESM) that is based on self-monitoring and personalized feedback. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a personalized ESM-based feedback module (Therap-i) in improving participants' insights and self-management of depressive symptoms. Method: A mixed-method design was employed, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Questionnaires were utilized to collect quantitative data pertaining to participants' insights, self-management, and illness perception. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and Hotelling's T-squared test were employed for data analysis. Comparative analysis of illness perception and self-management strategies was conducted between the control group (n = 25) and the intervention group (n = 22). Furthermore, semi-structured interviews (n = 15) were thematically analyzed to gain a comprehensive understanding of participants' evaluations of the Therap-i module. Results: All participants recommended implementing the Therap-i module as a treatment option for individuals with depressive symptoms. The study found that using the Therap-i module led to increased insights into depressive symptomatology, and a majority of the participants reported improvements in their ability to reduce depressive symptoms. Although illness perception increased over time, no significant differences were observed between the intervention and control group. The qualitative interviews revealed four primary areas of impact, each comprising various subthemes. These main areas of impact were: awareness, insights, treatment changes, and self-management. Conclusion: All participants found the Therap-i module beneficial in gaining insight into their depressive symptoms and recommended it as a treatment option. While most reported specific self-management strategies, some did not translate the insights into behavioral changes. Further research is needed to investigate how to effectively translate these insights into action.
